Dr. Ken Henry, Former Pastor
Dr. Ken Henry served as Senior Pastor to Stone Church from June 2007 to July 2016. As he began his ministry here, he told us of his previous experiences and hopes for our time together. From his 2007 statement: Like you, my spiritual path has been varied. I was baptized Episcopalian in a small church in Redmond, Ore. - the first baby born in Deschutes County in 1961. Yet soon after, my family moved to Beaverton, OR, where the Presbyterians took me in as one of their own. It was the youth group that actually got me hooked. Indeed, for several years, I worked with youth programming, directing high school and junior age kids in Portland as well as in San Carlos, Calif. Then I met another Presbyterian - Heather - and things went from there. Now we have two daughters, Katie, 17, and Madeline, 12. My how time flies! When I was younger, my attendance in church was divided between my Mom's idea of church and my Dad's. Thus, on some Sundays I went to the church with pews, communion, hymns, sermons and choral anthems, while on other Sundays my father took us hiking in the Columbia River Gorge, identifying wildflowers and soaking our tired feet in a cool stream. This is probably why, years later, I found myself writing my Doctor of Ministry thesis on Loving the Earth: Introducing Reformed Christian Eco-Spirituality to Adults. The natural world and the Christian life go hand in hand for me. In my years of pastoral ministry, serving churches in California, Oregon and Washington, I have enjoyed the challenge of living out Christ's command to love our neighbors, whether they are people living and dying with AIDS, foster children, the homeless, inner city kids, shut-ins or simply the people who come each Sunday morning. I love to write, cook, preach, watch movies, listen to a good story, hike, juggle, spend time with my family, talk theology over a cup of coffee, and walk along the beach. Most of all, I like to watch the Spirit of God shape and move people to care and reach out to others in both great and small ways.
